Celtic out of the Champions League after narrow defeat against Bayern Munich

Celtic exited the Champions League on their shields after a 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in a pulsating encounter at Parkhead.

A costly moment of slack play in the 22nd minute allowed French star Kingsley Coman to open the scoring and blight an encouraging first-half performance by Brendan Rodgers’ side.

However, Celtic roared back after the break and Callum McGregor deservedly levelled in the 74th only for midfielder Javi Martinez to restore the German giants’ lead three minutes later meaning that with two Group B fixtures remaining, the Scottish champions have only three points from 12 and cannot get into the knockout stages.

Bayern beat the Scottish champions 3-0 with ease in the Allianz Arena earlier in the month but the Hoops can take encouragement from this performance as they still remain on course for a place in the Europa League.

Bayern’s selection problems had dominated the build-up to the game after Poland striker Robert Lewandowski had joined Juan Bernat, Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Franck Ribery on the sidelines with a thigh injury.

The solution coach Jupp Heynckes spoke of among six changes was to play James Rodriguez as a withdrawn main striker.

Celtic’s injury problems were again in central defence and with Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko still out, midfielder Nir Bitton partnered Dedryck Boyata.

French striker Moussa Dembele started for the first time in the Champions League this season, supported by McGregor, as Rodgers returned seven of his big-hitters to the starting line-up.

Hoops midfielder Stuart Armstrong missed a sitter in the fifth minute, mis-kicking six yards out after James Forrest had set him up with a perfect cross.

The Bundesliga leaders were struggling to get into any sort of rhythm and in the 15th minute Dembele outpaced Rafinha in the left channel but dragged his left-footed drive wide of the far post.

Celtic’s good early work was undone, however, when Boyata hesitated and let a long punt from Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich go over his head.

Coman was on to the ball in a flash and rounded keeper Craig Gordon before slipping the ball past the backtracking Boyata, Bitton and Mikael Lustig.

On the half-hour mark Bayern midfielder David Alaba whipped the ball away from Dembele as he looked to tap in Armstrong’s pass across goal.

The former Dundee United midfielder came close three minutes after the restart with a drive which was brilliantly tipped over by Ulreich for a corner.

Amid great encouragement from the home fans, Rodgers’ side kept up their efforts and their goal arrived when Forrest threaded a ball through to McGregor, who drilled his shot low past Ulreich.

Celtic Park was still rocking when Coman took an Alaba pass and crossed for Martinez to rise above Bitton and head past Gordon.

It was a stunning blow to the home side but again they came back, fighting and scrapping for another leveller, only to run out of time before they were given a heartfelt round of applause from their supporters at the end.

Trump responds to New York terror attack: 'Looks like another attack by a very sick person'

President Donald Trump has responded to the terror attack in New York City, saying that the attack appears to have come from a “sick and deranged” person.

“In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person,” Mr Trump tweeted. “Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!”

The President was joined by his wife in condemning the attacks and expressing grief for the victims of the attack. At least eight people have been reported dead after a rented Home Depot truck smashed through a bike lane in lower Manhattan.

“My heart breaks for #NYC today,” Ms Trump wrote on Twitter. “Thoughts & prayers as we monitor the situation.”

At least eight people were killed after the truck smashed through the bike lane, and at least a dozen more were injured, according to New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio, who addressed reporter during a press conference following the violence.

“It is a very painful day in our city,” Mr DeBlasio said. “Horrible tragedy on the west side.”

Mr DeBlasio and law enforcement officials said that they were treating the incident as a terrorist attack, and said that the suspect was detained by a police officer on duty after the truck smashed into a school bus near Chambers Street. They did not immediately release the name of the suspect.

Officials did, however, indicate that the suspect was a 29-year-old man, and said that he had exited the truck armed with a pellet gun and a paintball gun.

Images from the scene showed bikes mangled and strewn along the path in the area where the truck hit between Houston and Chambers street. Videos showed at least one dead body on the ground, and a heavy presence of first responders in the area.

New York terror suspect drove truck into school bus with children on board

The New York terror suspect hit a school bus with his rental truck, injuring two children and two adults on board, according to the NYPD commissioner.

The 29-year-old suspect drove the rental truck down a busy cycle path near the World Trade Center before crashing into the bus, which belonged to nearby Stuyvesant High School.

The school said those inside the bus “might be a little hurt, but no one is dead.”

After crashing, the driver exited the vehicle holding imitation firearms, and was shot by police. He is now in custody and is being treated in hospital.

A teenage student from the high school told the New York Post: “He came out of one of the cars. He had two guns. He was running around Chambers (Street) and somebody started to chase him. I heard four to six gunshots – everybody starts running.”

It has been reported that the suspect screamed “Allahu Akbar” after the crash.

Six people were declared dead at the scene and two were pronounced dead later at hospital.

Eleven people have been left with serious injuries, but New York police commissioner James O’Neill “there may be more people injured”.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo called it a “lone wolf” attack and said there was no evidence to suggest it was part of a wider plot.

“This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

New York attack: Eight people confirmed dead after terrorist ploughs truck into pedestrians

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has revealed the death toll from the suspected terror attack in Lower Manhattan has reached eight.

Speaking at a press conference where officials confirmed they were treating the attack as “cowardly terrorist attack”, Mr Blasio said a number of other people had been injured.

“Let me be clear, this was an act of terrorism, a particularly cowardly act of terrorism aimed at innocent civilians,” he said, speaking on a evening when the city was preparing to celebrate Halloween.

Officials said the suspect, a 29-year-old man, who police declined to identify at this stage, had entered the bicycle lane at 3.05pm in a rental truck belonging to the Home Depot chain, striking cyclists and pedestrians. At Chambers Street, the driver struck a school bus, injuring two adults and children.

At that point, the suspect emerged from the truck carrying what appeared to be two handguns – a paintball gun and pellet gun. As he did so, he shouted “Allahu Akbar”. Officials said the suspect was shot in the abdomen and taken away by police.

New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill said that the statement from from the suspect when he exited the truck was “consistent” with a terrorist attack. Officials said the suspect was not from New York but would not provide information about where he came from – either from in the US or overseas.

The Associated Press said that witnesses described a scene of panic and blood, with people screaming in fear and the path strewn with bodies and mangled bicycles.

Tom Gay, a school photographer, was on Warren Street and heard people saying there was an accident. He told the news agency, he went down to West Street and a woman came around the corner shouting, “He has a gun! He has a gun!’

Mr Gay said he stuck his head around the corner and saw a slender man in a blue track suit running southbound on West Street holding a gun. He said there was a heavyset man pursuing him.

He said he heard five or six shots and the man in the tracksuit fell to the ground, gun still raised in the air. He said a man came over and kicked the gun out of his hand.

Human brains use a lot of energy, but so do the brains of other animals, research shows

Oct. 31 (UPI) — New research suggests when it comes to the energy of demands of the brain, humans aren’t as special as previously thought.

On average, the human brain comprises just 2 percent of a person’s body weight, but demands 25 percent of a person’s daily energy budget. In other words, roughly a quarter of all the calories humans consume each day are used to keep the brain operating at full capacity.

Until now, scientists assumed this ratio was unique to humans. But new research suggests the brains of other animals require similar amounts of energy.

“We don’t have a uniquely expensive brain,” Doug Boyer, assistant professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University, said in a news release. “This challenges a major dogma in human evolution studies.”

Blood vessels carry energy to the brain in the form of glucose, a type of sugar. To gauge how much energy is consumed by the brains of other animals, scientists collected a variety of anatomical measurements.

Researchers measured the size of the bony canals that encircle cranial arteries in several species, including mice, rats, squirrels, rabbits, monkeys and humans. Scientists compared the data with estimates of each species’ brain energy demands as well as measurements of each species’ internal skull volume.

Their analysis — detailed in the Journal of Human Evolution — showed larger canals were associated with brains with greater energy demands.

Scientists used their findings to estimate the brain glucose uptake of 15 species for which brain energy costs are unknown, including lemurs, monkeys and treeshrews.

The new analysis confirmed humans use proportionally more energy than rodents, Old World monkeys and great apes to keep their brain functioning. But several species use similar proportions of energy to power their brains. Pen-tailed treeshrews, ring-tailed lemurs and pygmy marmosets all used nearly a quarter of their daily energy budget to keep their brain functioning.

“This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise,” Boyer said. “The metabolic cost of a structure like the brain is mainly dependent on how big it is, and many animals have bigger brain-to-body mass ratios than humans.”

The findings suggest the ability to grow an increasingly energy-expensive brain developed well before the emergence of humans.

California school evacuated after man takes teacher hostage

Oct. 31 (UPI) — A school in California was evacuated after a parent took a teacher hostage, school district officials said Tuesday.

It was reported that a man had barricaded himself in a room with a teacher at Castle View Elementary School in Riverside at about 11:15 a.m. PDT, Riverside Police Department spokesman Ryan Railsback said.

Hostage negotiators attempted to coax the man out as police warned he may be armed.

“We want this situation to be resolved as safely and peacefully as possible,” Railsback said.

All 670 students were accounted for as police evacuated them from the campus and began releasing them to their parents at 1 p.m.

NFL trade deadline: New York Jets trade for San Francisco 49ers CB Rashard Robinson

The New York Jets acquired cornerback Rashard Robinson from the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday in exchange for an undisclosed 2018 draft pick.

The 49ers also released quarterback Brian Hoyer in addition to cornerback Will Redmond from the injured reserve list. The team officially acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots on Tuesday morning.

The addition of Robinson comes with New York dealing with injuries to its secondary, namely fellow cornerbacks Morris Claiborne (foot) and Buster Skrine (concussion).

Robinson recorded 61 tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 22 career games since being selected by San Francisco in the fourth round of the 2016 draft. The 22-year-old has 27 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery while playing all eight games for the winless 49ers (0-8).

Robinson started the first seven contests this season being replaced by rookie Ahkello Witherspoon in Sunday’s 33-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

In 55 career games, Hoyer has a 59.3 percent completion rate with 9,853 passing yards, 48 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. This season, the 32-year-old was 0-6 as a starter for the 49ers with four TD passes and four interceptions.

Redmond was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 3 due to an ankle injury. He was originally drafted by the 49ers in the third round of the 2016 draft.

New York Giants indefinitely suspend CB Janoris Jenkins

New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins has been suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules, the club announced Tuesday.

The suspension takes effect immediately, with Jenkins scheduled to miss Sunday’s home game against the Los Angeles Rams.

“As a member of this team, there are standards and we have responsibilities and obligations,” coach Ben McAdoo said. “When we don’t fulfill those obligations, there are consequences. As I have said before, we do not like to handle our team discipline publicly. There are times when it is unavoidable, and this is one of those times.”

Jenkins was not in attendance on Monday as the Giants returned from their bye week, with McAdoo telling reporters that the 29-year-old had been excused for personal reasons.

“At that point, neither myself nor any of the coaches had heard from Jackrabbit,” McAdoo said. “I did not speak with him directly until Tuesday morning.”

It was at that point that Jenkins had been informed of his suspension.

Jenkins is the second cornerback for the Giants (1-6) to be suspended this season, with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie receiving a ban three weeks ago after leaving the field during the team’s setback to the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 8.

Jenkins recorded an interception for a touchdown against the Denver Broncos on Oct. 15 and has 24 tackles in six games this season.
